Freespirit Recreation Aspen Pro Standard vs Horntools Themis 140

The Freespirit Recreation Aspen Pro Standard and the Horntools Themis 140 are both hardshell tents in the same part of the market, which makes them a genuine head-to-head rather than a comparison across categories. Freespirit Recreation and Horntools take noticeably different approaches to the same problem.

The Aspen Pro Standard is 9.200000000000003 kg lighter at 60.8 kg against 70 kg, which on a factory roof rated for 68 to 75 kg is often the difference between a legal fit and a rack upgrade. Inside, the Themis 140 gives 2.97 m² of sleeping floor against 2.39 m², about 24 percent more, though both are rated for 2. Headroom separates them further: 132.1 cm in the Aspen Pro Standard against 100 cm, which is the difference between sitting up to dress and doing it lying down. List prices are within $64 of each other, so price is unlikely to decide this one.

They open differently: the Aspen Pro Standard is a clamshell and the Themis 140 a pop-up. That is not cosmetic — it decides whether headroom is even across the tent or tapers towards one end, and how much of the roof the tent occupies when closed. The Aspen Pro Standard uses aluminum hardshell: extruded aluminum frame, polymer corners, honeycomb aluminum top; the Themis 140 uses ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene). Canvas differs too: tri-Layer: polycotton fill between two layers of 210D ripstop against cotton, linen, polyester with PU coating (water column 2000 mm). Closed, the Aspen Pro Standard sits 11.3 cm lower on the roof — 18.7 cm against 30 cm — which is drag you carry on every mile you are not camping.

Freespirit Recreation

Aspen Pro Standard

The Aspen Pro Standard is the 1-2 person version of Freespirit Recreation's aluminum-hardshell Aspen Pro clamshell, with a honeycomb aluminum top and gas-strut assisted opening. It weighs 134 lbs and is heavier than the tonneau-topped Aspen Lite Standard but uses a full hardshell lid. Dual-channel aluminum rails allow mounting crossbars and accessories.

  • Full aluminum honeycomb hardshell with gas-strut assist
  • Dual-channel aluminum rails for mounting accessories
  • Includes mattress, ladder, cover and gear storage grid
  • Narrower 1-2 person interior floor

Horntools

Themis 140

The 140 cm two-person version of Horntools's Themis hard-shell roof tent, with an ABS shell that opens in under three minutes to 100 cm interior height. It has three entrances, four windows with fly screens and blackout blinds, integrated LED strips and a 7 cm memory-foam mattress, and packs down to a 30 cm profile. It is the smaller of Horntools's two Themis hard-shell sizes.

  • ABS hard shell packs to a low 30 cm profile
  • Quick sub-3-minute setup with 2.6 m ladder included
  • Three entrances and 7 cm memory-foam mattress
  • Lower 100 cm interior height than Horntools's folding Elements tents

Which one to pick

Take the Themis 140 if you need the sleeping room more than you need the lighter tent. Take the Aspen Pro Standard if your roof load limit is the binding constraint. Beyond that the feature rows below — heater port, skylight, annex, cargo rails — are where the remaining difference lies.
