Direct4x4 ClamTrekk vs Ironman 4x4 Orion 1200 Lightweight

The Direct4x4 ClamTrekk and the Ironman 4x4 Orion 1200 Lightweight are both hardshell tents in the same part of the market, which makes them a genuine head-to-head rather than a comparison across categories. Direct4x4 and Ironman 4x4 take noticeably different approaches to the same problem.

On weight they are effectively level — 76 kg against 71.5 kg — so the roof load question resolves the same way for both. The ClamTrekk lists $515 lower, at $1,984 against $2,499.

The ClamTrekk uses honeycomb aluminium; the Orion 1200 Lightweight uses pressed-aluminium hardshell with aluminium honeycomb base. Canvas differs too: 65% polyester / 35% cotton, mould-proof, water resistant 10,000 mm against 280gsm ripstop polycotton fly with blackout coating; 120gsm super-fine insect mesh. Closed, the Orion 1200 Lightweight sits 5.5 cm lower on the roof — 14.5 cm against 20 cm — which is drag you carry on every mile you are not camping.

Which one to pick

Take the ClamTrekk if the budget is fixed. Beyond that the feature rows below — heater port, skylight, annex, cargo rails — are where the remaining difference lies.
